Devlog — Exploring the World, Events & Combat

Hi everyone!

Time for another look into the development of Aranfell: The Forgotten Lands, a solo-developed pixel RPG inspired by tabletop games and D20 systems.

This update highlights three core features currently implemented and being refined:

1. WASD Look Around the World Map

The overworld of Aranfell is made up of procedural hex tiles that form the dynamic map.

Players don’t move their characters directly with keys — instead, WASD is used to move the camera, inspect terrain, and plan their route.

2. Event Cards Triggered by Movement

Whenever a hero moves to a new tile, they trigger a card event from one of three decks:

  • Beggar – social and random interactions
  • Encounter – narrative-driven mini-events
  • Hunt – combat-focused cards

Cards are based on a D20 roll, and energy is consumed depending on the result. Events may offer decisions, rewards, or initiate battle.

3. Combat UI & Enemy Targeting

If combat begins (through cards or enemy attacks), a turn-based combat panel appears:

  • Health, Mana, Energy are displayed for all characters
  • Enemy targeting is handled through UI buttons
  • Dice rolls appear to visualize initiative and damage
  • Actions include attacks, spells (UI still in progress), and items

Combat is still in its early logic stage, but all core systems are functioning and ready for polishing.
